About the event
Emily Brontë’s poem reminds us to “Sing when night’s decay ushers in a drearier day”. Join the City of Oxford Choir in Exeter College Chapel for an autumnal programme, full of golden colours. Central to the programme are two evocative cycles from Anton Dvořák and Veljo Tormis, groups of songs which - although freshly composed responses to contemporary poetry - spring from the melodic traditions of their Bohemian and Estonian peoples. Neighbouring Latvian, Ēriks Ešenvalds, gives us two further Autumnal songs in his particular heartfelt idiom (tuned wine glasses and all). Alongside well-known gems from Saint-Saëns and Brahms, the programme is completed by a sequence of British choral homages to the trees from which those autumn leaves fall: the Oak, Ash, and Willow.
